The Body of Work module I am studying asks me to defend my work now I am close to finishing it. Probably the aspect of my work I feel it will be most likely necessary to defend is the use of composites to paint a picture of Deptford. That is because while I believe them to depict a Deptford that is changing it is still an artistic vision and needs to be portrayed in this way.
On the 16th December 2019, I attended a Level 3 specific study hangout aimed at showing how theory and practice sides of Level 3 are integrated by building upon what we had learnt in the first study hangout on 24th October 2019. The focus this time was sharing our particular case studies for our projects along with what we think are our grand narratives to the rest of the group.
For this assignment, instead of working on the body of work as a whole, I’ve concentrated on experimenting with one aspect of the project. The aspect is the way I arrange people in the composites, focusing on two locations specifically. It draws on the factor of chance in photography and plays upon it, with my arrangement of people staging the scene and creating potential narrative for the viewer.
I went out on this occasion to experiment some more with the placement of people in the scene, making up each composite. I have had some inspiration for this topic when I was reading up on an artist who has inspired me to make composites called Chris Dorley-Brown.
This collection of images juxtaposes the old and the new, within single frames, around my local area of Deptford.
My two main influences for the main bulk of Assignment 1 - the 'straight' photography side of it were Chris Dorley-Brown and Zed Nelson.
This collection of mainly ‘straight’ photography has all been photographed in my local area of Deptford. Drawing on influences from the likes of Chris Dorley-Brown and Zed Nelson who have photographed East London, I have decided to document my area. This area shares distinct traces of gentrification which I have photographed and put together in a series. The series is intended to be viewed in order (read from top to bottom on this blog). The last photograph strays away from the concept of ‘straight’ photography and instead plays with photography and reality and was influenced in large part by Noémie Goudal.
