Place and its people are a central aspect of how my project Reconstructing Deptford started and how it has progressed. I have deliberately put place first because it was the primary consideration for me as I began. Now, I consider people to be the thing the holds a place like Deptford together, with the setting they find themselves in the backdrop. Regeneration of a place that is close to my heart is of interest to me. Showing the people within the diptychs to be similar in one way yet different in another backs up my assertion that people in the regenerated setting are an important part of Deptford too.
By sharing these diptychs, I am inviting the viewer to explore the ongoing changes in Deptford with me, through my eyes. It is a local project so the people I most want to look at the work are its inhabitants. However, since similar changes can be extrapolated to other developing towns, I consider the project to be wider reaching than Deptford.
My diptychs are made up of composites where people were present at those points in the frame but at different times. This questions the decisive moment within photography and comments on this trope by subverting it. Therefore my work fits into an art context rather than a photojournalistic one.

I have presented the diptychs along with text which I have carefully considered in two different ways: anchorage above and relay below. I have yet to decide which approach works best but aim to reach a decision with the help of my tutor, my peers and my own intuition.
Lastly, I have photographed the first part of a diptych that incorporates my own imagery shot for this project on the hoarding of a new development. I think this image (shown below and in WiP #10), when completed as a diptych or grid, will make the connection of regeneration to my project much more persuasive.

WiP #10 – can you say more about this? It stands out for me. Well done on getting A4 in. Did you also receive an email prompting you to submit for assessment? I’ve completed CS A4 but still working on BOW A4 and feel slightly pressurised now 😮

Thanks Sarah-Jane, yes I got A4 in eventually but it took me a while. I talk about the idea behind inserting my own images onto an image in WiP #10 and the idea came about while I was researching Gill Golding.
I think you’ll be fine, I don’t know what your timeframe is but I know your work ethic is good! Also your work is developing in a fascinating way
